Fredericksburg, Virginia

Lewis store

Picture 6 of 29

Constructed in 1749 by John Lewis, the Lewis Store is considered one of the oldest surviving urban stores in America. Lewis left the store to his son, Colonel Fielding Lewis, who continued to operate it until his death in 1781. George Washington shopped there, as did many distinguished Fredericksburg residents.
