Fredericksburg, Virginia

Fredericksburg Baptist Church Picture 9 of 29
Built in the Gothic Revival style, the Fredericksburg Baptist church contibutes one of the three notable mid-19th century spires to Fredericksburg's skyline. Its architect is unknown, but at least one historian has claimed that it was James Renwick, who designed Fredericksburg's new court house about the same time.
In the basement of the church, Pastor Broaddus established the Fredericksburg Female Academy (1855-1862), teaching young ladies English, Latin, French, and Music.
Like other public buildings, the church was used as a Union hospital during the Civil War and was heavily damaged.
