Mount Vernon


Origin of the Purple Heart trail from Mount Vernon through Virginia.  This monument commemorates the establishment of the Purple Heart decoration by General George Washington, commander-in-chief of the Continental army, on August 7, 1782.  The Purple Heart trail memorializes those patriots who were awarded the Purple Heart medal in combat in defense of their nation.  Dedicated this 7th day of August 1988, by the military order of the Purple Heart and the Ladies of their auxiliary.
