Mount Vernon

Water barrels Picture 27 of 69
The cupola on the roof of the Mansion, with the dove of peace flying on top. The cupola was used to ventilate the house in the days before air conditioning. Hot air would rise through the house and vent out of the cupola windows. Fresh air would be drawn in through the first story windows.
The original building was a two-story structure that constituted the center of the mansion, defined by the two fireplace chimmenys. From 1759 through 1774, a third floor was added to the structure. The outer wings and cupola were added to the building from 1775 through 1778.
