Martha and George Washington rest in marble sarcophagus' in the center building. The stone tablet above the entraceway reads, "Within this Enclosure Rest the remains of Gen. George Washington".
The marble shaft on the left was erected to the memory of Bushrod Washington, nephew of George Washington. The marble shaft on the left was erected to the memory of Bushrod Washington's nephew, John Augustine Washington. They were the proprietors of Mount Vernon when the tomb was built. They are buried in the inner vault. The marble shafts on the side of the enclosure mark the graves of Nelly Custis Lewis and one of her daughters.
