A golden eagle above the entrance of the Illinois monument.
The original double layer of gold leaf wore away over the years, causing the formation of a thick coat of patina (rust). As water from rain and humidity dripped off the surfaces of the eagle, it stained the white marble of the portico and significantly impacted on the appearance of the Illinois Monument. Gold gilding was reapplied and the restored statue was again placed on the monument on October 21, 1996 to protect the bronze statue and the monument.
